Four Things

2006/01/29 filed under /personal

Ouch, I have been tagged by BOK, and now have to follow the hype around these "four things".

Oh well, why not...

Four jobs Ive had in my life

  • Shoe store employee (when Al Bundy was my great example)
  • Theater employee (great way for highschool kids to make a buck)
  • System Administrator (always have been a nerd)
  • Import/Export manager (... and now somewhat of a "suit"!)

Four movies I can watch over and over

Four places I have lived

  • Emmeloord
  • Groningen
  • Utrecht
  • Almere (almost!)

Four TV shows I love to watch

  • Fawlty Towers
  • Friends
  • Seinfeld
  • Alf (still funny?)

Four places I have been on vacation

Four of my favourite dishes

  • Martabak Telor
  • Rendang
  • Nasi Goreng
  • Foo Yung Hai

Four websites I visit daily

Four places I would rather be right now

Four bloggers I am tagging

Let's see if they can be tricked into following this insane hype too ;-)

Update: according to Bok, four concerts are allowed too.

Four concerts

  • Iron Maiden @ Zwolle (my first concert)
  • Dismember @ Wacken Open Air 2003 (awesome sound!)
  • Bloodbath @ Wacken Open Air 2005 (one time concert!)
  • Duran Duran @ Amsterdam 2005 (the wild boys still rock!)

GTA San Andreas Completed

2006/01/29 filed under /personal

After a too long period of time, I can finally say that I finished all of the missions (side-missions not counted) of Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas.

I think that totals my list of "completed games" to three. On the Commodore 64, I finished Defender of the Crown; on my first(?) PC, I finished Sim City (there was no space left to build blah blah) and now I finished GTA San Andreas on my Xbox.

What a blast this game was. Definitely great fun. Maybe I'll start continuing the other GTA games... I still have that Thief game to check out too though (and Prince of Persia, Ninja Gaiden etc.).

Moving!

2006/01/25 filed under /news

Today I received the great news that I'll be the lucky owner of my own house! So that means that I'll be leaving Utrecht and move my things to Almere.

If you know anyone who's looking for a place to rent in Utrecht, have them contact me as soon as possible. It'll be available from March 1st.

1 big living room, three bedrooms, separate kitchen and bathroom located very close to the Utrecht-Overvecht trainstation and "winkelcentrum".

One Many Army - 21st Century Killing Machine

2006/01/23 filed under /metal

Johan Lindstrand (lead singer of the late The Crown) took off his crown and formed his One Man Army (escorted by the Undead Quartet). Together they threw together this Death & Roll'ish 21st Century Killing Machine.

Fan of The Crown with Lindstrand? Buy this album. It's as simple as that. The harsh, raw sounds of this guy's vocal chords are still the same. The music is slightly slower, giving it a Death & Roll sound. Think of it as a mixture of The Crown and new style Entombed.

Label: Nuclear Blast

File Swapping

2006/01/18 filed under /web

Yesterday, Joffie -never ending source of links-, brought file-swap.com under my attention. In my 50 milliseconds I decided to check it out and it turned out to be a funny site.

You upload a file, and get a random file back, resulting in the most ridiculous images of people, animals and or objects. Fun for > 50 milliseconds (but not for much longer ;-).

Silk Icon Set

2006/01/17 filed under /web

Every person who ever designed (or tried to design) some website knows the problem: icons.

Often you will need small little icons for whatever task necessary and the big problem then is finding them. I'm horrible with The GIMP so creating them myself is not optional.

A while ago I found the Flags of the World site, solving the need for flag images, and a rather awkward collection of other icons could be found at Jordan Willms blog.

Yet yesterday I accidentally hit the Silk Icon Set Rather useful, good looking icons, released under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License.

If anyone has more good resources, feel free to post them here :-)

Overvecht

2006/01/10 filed under /personal

Overvecht is an area of Utrecht. I live here for several years now and it always has been a rather quiet area.

But more and more unpleasant events are unfolding in this part of the city. In August 2005, the body of Ilona Nemeth has been found in a park at the end of my street and today, there has been an explosion due to a gas-leak in a nearby shopping area.

Ironically, also today, I received a newsletter in my mailbox regarding this shopping center. The authors wished me a happy 2006 and hoped I would come spend my money over there again. They also announced the upcoming renovation. Hopefully, they don't see explosions as part of that plan.

Luckily I wasn't near the area during the explosion. After work, I drove past the shopping center (like every day) and it really looked bad. It was clear that there must have been a massive force blowing everything away. The backside of the store-that-used-to-be was completely demolished, way worse than the front part (as shown on pictures in the media).

Oh well, I still like the area here, but will move regardless (yes, I will be buying a house soon!). Utrecht isn't fitting in my budget, so I am forced out of the city. So not because of the events of lately, but it least it makes saying goodbye to Overvecht (and the evil bastards) easier.

Companies and Internet usage

2006/01/03 filed under /random_thoughts

It's fun to see how certain companies seem to embrace the whole Internet deal, while others seem to stay away from it; at least in the Netherlands.

When you want to make an appointment for a car repair, don't expect email work for you. My experience is that these companies don't care about email enough, and don't expect an answer within a day or three. The reply you finally will get, will be like "please give us a call".

Such a shame! These companies could put their entire calendar online, so you could easily see the first available spot and claim it for an appointment.

Other companies seem to get it right. Today I tried to get some information regarding houses (yes, I'll be moving someday soon ... hopefully). My seven emails, to seven different realtors were all replied within one hours. Of course, these realtors have seen the value of a website too. You can see the entire list of available houses online, with photos and what not. Some even offer mortgage calculators, maps of the area and everything that might be remotely interesting to their customers.

I believe not every company really needs a shiny website, yet most companies could benefit from one. A dentist could show the waiting list for appointments, with an easy contact form. Stores in general can place their special offers online. The least every company with an email address can do is reply within at least a day.

2005 Highlights

2006/01/03 filed under /personal

Like Bok (and many others), I just have to list a few highlights of 2005, before we can tar/bzip the whole year and move on.

Music: Hate Forest - Sorrow
Movie: The Amityville Horror
Books: none
Internet-site: SupportMyWedding.com Bloglines
Car: Toyota
Game: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

It's all rather tricky. Sigh - Gallows Gallery is ranking high on my music list, as well as Detonation - Portals to Uphobia. And there are probably a whole lot of other albums that I forgot about, but really appreciate.

As for movies ... tricky too. I haven't seen that many. The Exorcism of Emily Rose was refreshing (compared to other exorcism movies), but quite frankly: I cannot really remember all the movies I have seen. I do remember the amityville horror, for I've watched that in a cinema in Jakarta, and it was a movie that had my attention throughout the play.

Last year I was too busy with other things and didn't read any books worthwhile. Against all Enemies started out ok, yet was dragging on and I had problems keeping focus near the end.

I'm not sure whether I started using bloglines in 2005 or before, yet I doubt it was long before (a grep on my mailbox showed I joined on Jan. 5th 2005).

My car has not been failing me so far, so yeah, got to stick with this one for a while ;-)

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is by far the best game. I'm finally close to the end now!
